This newly trending Korean Dalgona coffee is made with only 4 ingredients and transforms your boring instant coffee into something much more posh and rich!
Want to elevate your instant coffee game? This Dalgona coffee is perfect for you!
But what is this Dalgona coffee? A coffee brand? A special roast? Nope.
Dalgona coffee is actually a style of coffee made by whipping instant coffee with sugar and hot water until thick and served with either hot or cold milk. Doing so, the coffee becomes frothy and thicker in viscosity, which turns a cup of water coffee into something between a latte or cappuccino. Plus, it's much more aesthetically pleasing than a mug of black coffee!
Mhmm. Never though it'd be possible to make instant coffee fancy, did you? 😉
Now since you're making yourself a fancy cup of coffee, don't forget to also grab a slice of banana nut bread or make some of our easy soft and chewy chocolate chip cookies!
Here are some tips and FAQs for making this trendy Dalgona coffee!
Can I change the amount of ingredients used?
Yes and no. Typically, Dalgona coffee is made with equal amounts of instant coffee to sugar to hot water. We found that the amount of sugar used can be increased, decreased, or not used at all and the coffee still whipped up perfectly. However, the instant coffee and water ratio should remain similar with maximumly a difference of 1 teaspoon.
As for the milk, we recommend a ratio of 1 part whipped coffee to 2 parts milk, but you are welcomed to free adjust the amount used to your preference.
How do I know if my whipped coffee is thick enough?
Spoon your whipped coffee mixture on top of your glass of milk.
At first, the mixture will be very dark and thin, but as you whisk and incorporate air into the coffee mixture, it's begin to froth up and eventually become thick and also caramel in color. When it's ready, you should be able to drizzle it like a ribbon. This whole process can take anywhere from 2-5 minutes or more, depending on how fast you are whisking and the whisk you are using.
Whisk sugar, instant coffee, and hot water to dissolve.
After about a minute of whisking, it begins to turn lighter in color and becomes frothy.
Thick and ribbony is what you're looking for. This took us about 3 minutes of vigorous whisking.
Must I use instant coffee for Dalgona coffee?
Yes, Dalgona coffee will only work using instant coffee because of how instant coffee is processed. Ground coffee beans will not dissolve and whip up like instant coffee. However, espresso powder may do the same trick. Just make to reduce the amount of espresso powder used since it is much stronger than instant coffee.
Use a ballon whisk.
I highly recommend using a ballon whisk with thin wires to help you quickly whip up the coffee mixture. Small whisks and ones with thick wires usually put more labor on your arm. Also, I do not recommend using a hand mixer unless you are making a large batch, which should be at least 3 times this recipe.
Doesn't it look like a good latte? 😉
