Korean tuna rice is one of our go-to quick meals to make when we occasionally pull all-nighters watching anime, Kdrama, or TV shows.
All you really need are Korean hot pepper tuna and some cooked rice. The tuna tastes mildly spicy, savory, and a little sweet with small bits of potato, carrots, and onions. Super tasty and perfect over rice!

Ingredients
- Korean canned tuna with hot pepper sauce - You can use the light, regular, or double hot version. All of them are amazing!
- Cooked white rice - Any kind of steamed rice works, just make sure it's hot. We usually use white rice, brown rice, or Korean purple rice.
- Egg - This is optional if you want to add a fried egg to your Korean tuna rice. We highly recommend it!
- Sesame oil - To add a bit of extra nuttiness to the rice, but you can omit if you'd like.
- Sesame seeds and green onion for garnish
Instructions
Make a perfect crispy fried egg:
1. In a fry pan over medium high heat, generously coat the bottom of the pan with oil. Once the oil is hot, shimmering, and just starting to smoke, crack the egg into the oil.
2. Fry the egg until the white is set and the bottom is golden brown and crispy.
🌟 Pro tip: Slightly tilt the pan and spoon hot oil onto the egg white. This will help cook the egg white on top without overcooking the yolk.
Assemble the Korean tuna rice:
3. In your serving bowl, add the hot white rice and top it with a can of Korean hot pepper tuna.
4. Place the fried egg on top of the tuna and drizzle with sesame oil. Sprinkle some sesame seeds and if you want, some sliced green onions.
5. Mix it all together and enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- Make sure to use Korean canned tuna labeled "with hot pepper sauce". The plain tuna won't have the yummy marinade/sauce.
- Eat it with gim/nori (seaweed). This Korean tuna rice is great on its own, but you can also eat it with seaweed snack or nori cut into smaller pieces. It's like an easy tuna rice ball!
- Add some kewpie mayo. If you're a mayo person, drizzle some kewpie mayo on the tuna rice for extra creaminess and richness.
