Dalgona coffee is the new trend, but for those of us who prefer matcha, here's Dalgona matcha latte! It's creamy, it's fun, it's delicious and eggless! You can now make your favorite matcha latte, right from your home kitchen!

Our daglona matcha latte sure have great retention.

I love coffee and all, but the caffeine in coffee doesn't usually love me back 😔. So I decided to make a glass of dalgona matcha latte instead! It's like a luxury matcha latte you'd normally find at your favorite café but made from your very own kitchen. It's sooo good!

Dalgona matcha latte dusted with some matcha powder.

But if you prefer coffee, try Dalgona coffee instead! Now don't forget to make yourself some pastries like our chocolate chip scones or banana nut bread to complete your matcha latte!🍵

Let's dive into some tips and FAQs to make this creamy Dalgona matcha latte!

    What is Dalgona matcha latte?

Stirring our glass of dalgona matcha latte.

Like Dalgona coffee, Dalgona matcha latte takes the same concept of adding a concentrated whipped beverage on top of hot or cold milk. Because the matcha is whipped until thick, it gives the drink a latte mouth-feel so you can enjoy a "latte" at home without any fancy equipment!

What is aquafaba and why is it needed?

    Aquafaba liquid, aka chickpea water.

Aquafaba is the liquid from can chickpeas and often used as an egg white substitute for vegan recipes. You can also make your own aquafaba liquid by reserving the liquid from cooking light color beans and chickpeas. Just note that the thickness of the homemade aquafaba may not be as thick as the can ones.

We used Goya brand chickpeas aquafaba liquid.

The reason why we are using aquafaba liquid to the recipe is for the foaming effect. Unlike instant coffee, matcha powder does not whip up. So, to imitate that that foaming effect, egg whites or aquafaba liquid is added. However, I'm not the biggest fan of eat raw eggs, so I recommend aquafaba liquid.

Now, what to do with your chickpeas after draining all the liquid? Make some classic hummus as an afternoon snack!

How long do I need to whisk the aquafaba liquid for?

Whisk the aquafaba liquid with sugar until it turns opaque, looks glossy, and holds a firm peak. It took us about 5-7 minutes of constant vigorous whisking, so go find yourself a workout buddy to share the task!

Whisk the aquafaba liquid with sugar.Add sugar to the aquafaba liquid and whisk to dissolve.

Mid stage of whisking aquafaba with sugar. After 2-3 minutes of whisking...

Whip aquafaba liquid and sugar until a thick peak forms.Tada! After about 6 minutes of vigorous whisking, our firm peak has formed and it looks nice and glossy!

If you are making more than one serving, then you can upgrade your whisk to a hand mixer or immersion blender to quicken up the pace.

Do I have to use matcha powder for Dalgona matcha?

Use at least a culinary quality level matcha powder.Highly recommend at least culinary grade matcha and above.

Yes. Unfortunately regular brewed green tea can never compare to the color nor flavor of matcha powder. Plus, matcha powder "dissolves right into the whipped aquafaba perfectly.

Add matcha powder and whisk until thoroughly combined.

We recommend using at least a culinary grade matcha powder  or ceremonial grade for both vibrancy and flavor.

    Can I substitute certain ingredients?

Dalgona matcha latte before matcha powder dusting.

Besides the aquafaba liquid and matcha powder, feel free to substitute any other ingredients and/ adjust the amount used to suit your taste!

A couple of common substitutions are swapping milk for nut milk to make it dairy free and vegan or subbing honey for sugar to make it refine sugar free.
